Don't twiddle your thumbs; don't bite your nails. If you have time to spare, like on a long train or bus ride, you may want to spend it editing your photos. Sometimes a little tweak can transform an okay picture into a stunning photo. If you have a Gmail account, you have a Picasa web album. Picasa Tool Pro app helps you to manage your Picasa web albums with a simple yet powerful user interface designed specifically for the Android powered smartphone. Display all of the Picasa featured photos as thumbnails. Click the thumbnail to view an enlarged photo. You can view the comments, save the photo to the sdcard or set it as your wallpaper. You can also flip the enlarged photo to see the next or previous one, or zoom in/out for more details. For we type A personalities, Photobucket is another way to organize and share photos almost as fast as you can take them. Drop the Geo-tagged images you want to save into folders. Finding favorites is easy with the key-word search. Now you have no excuse for putting off doing that vacation laundry as soon as you get home. Free. Download: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPad.

Want to say "Wishing you were here" with technology, because the old vacation postcard borders on being lame? Fotobabble gives you the opportunity to really tell others just how much you are enjoying your time away. Once you snap a photo, record your own audio message (up to one minute long), and e-mail the file to the e-mail account of your recipient. Free. Download it: iPhone/iPad. Other formats are coming. Not wanting to be techo for a change? Bring back those old time effects that were au courant a few decades ago. Hipstamatic is an app based on the discontinued 1982 camera of the same name; it has nine options that add artful blurring, fading, and flashes to your photos to create that vintage-snapshot look. $2. Don’t despair Android users, we have the FXCamera app. I have tried it, but did not care for the resolution after the editing, but it may have improved since then. You can download via a QR code reader here.

This app adds film, flash and pizzazz. Vignette features 68 effects, 56 frames, retro/vintage styles, LOMO/Diana/Holga toy camera styles, Polaroid/instant camera styles, cross-process, tilt-shift, photobooth, double exposure and more. Who has not heard of Photoshop? This app comes from the same people, the granddaddy of all photo editing software. The Photoshop.com Mobile app lets users crop and rotate images, adjust color and apply effects. It’s not as highly rated as similar free apps, however, and users have noted that the app is a bit slow and lacks important features like photo filters and a wide range of visual effects. Free. Have a tough time making decisions? Here is another choice for your photo-madness. This Camera ZOOM FX app packs a slew of useful features including 40 photo effects, zoom functions, photo bursts, timers, stable shot, white balance, grids and sound activation helping the faithful Android photographer. Social media hounds will just love the app’s Twitter and Facebook integration and geotagging capabilites. Download: Android $2.99.

Let there be light. If you are stuck with an older-generation iPhones it may lack a flash. The Camera Flash+ app solves that problem, with a self-adjusting burst of light that allows users to take vivid, point-and-shoot-quality photos long after the sun has set. Free. Download it: iPhone/iPad.

When bigger is better, take the long view Some scenes are simply too incredible to enjoy solely on one screen. Enter Pano, which stitches together up to 16 separate shots to take in, say, a 360-degree view of the Grand Canyon. A built-in guide helps you line up each frame, and the app will hold your place if a call interrupts your shoot. $2. Download it: iPhone/iPad.

Put a face to your adventures. It may have been invented for students, but Facebook's ubiquitous app has become an invaluable tool for all kinds of folks. Travelers can share crazy vacation moments on the spot, either in the live feed of status updates or in a mobile gallery where they can instantly dump cell phone pictures. Free.
